St Lucia Medical care is not as limited as generally thought. A full range of primary health care services and programs are in place to ensure a reasonable level of care. However with a world recession and growing demands, providing healthcare remains a challenge similar to most countries.
In fact the Government of St Lucia is by far the biggest provider of health care on the Island. This is achieved by an extensive network of Community Health Centres distributed through out the Country. Easily accessible, you should not have a difficulty in getting attention from any location you may be at on island.
Services are provided by some 31 health Centres administered by the Central Government through 8 Health Care Districts or Zones. Each Centre is within a 5 mile radius of a Community, taking into consideration the topography of this paradise destination. Staffed by dedicated and well trained staff, you will be assisted in your time of need.
The Government of Saint Lucia has been attempting to reform the health care services for several years now. The most notable effort is in finding ways to financing the Public Health Sector.
This comes in the form of Universal Health Care or UHC. However the impact so far is only manifested in free pharmaceuticals to diabetics who are also hypertensives.
The government insurance body called The National Insurance Corporation also plays a role in assisting the health sector. It facilitates free hospitalizations at the public hospitals for workers who are contributors.
A higher level of medical and health care is provided by District Hospitals:
Work continues on the previous site on the construction of a new hospital.
Our National Hospitals are based in the North on the periphery of the capital, Castries, just 6-10 minutes drive from the George FL Charkes (Vigie) Airport.
Named after Queen Victoria of England. It is the main and oldest health institution on the Island. It is a general hospital providing a full range of medical, surgical, obstetrics & gynecology and emergency services to the entire country. Chances are that if any one is seriously ill they will be attended to there.
For many years now, Victoria Hospital has been offering free kidney dialysis services to St Lucians.
2. National Wellness Centre:
Has replaced the well known Golden Hope Hospital for many years now. It is the only psychiatric hospital in Saint Lucia. Despite the level of care afforded, mental health care services are absolutely free to all St Lucians, including medications.
The concept of Polyclinics as part of our St Lucia Medical care landscape is relatively new. Constituting the second level of health care, at present the island has only polyclinic.
The Gros Islet Polyclinic is located in the North and comprises of :
The private health sector is comparatively small to the Public sector. Small health care clinics including doctors practices are found mainly in the Cities, towns and some of the coastal villages. However they do play an important role in complementing the public sector services.
Other Services available are:
There is one private hospital on the island namely The Tapion Hospital, located at Tapion on the edges of Castries. It offers the only CT Scan and MRI services on the island. Most doctors who work there also serve at Victoria Hospital.
Accessing St Lucia medical care can be facilitated by having private health Insurance. Private health insurance coverage is available to all residents. However just like many countries, most persons go without coverage. Challenging economic times do make it even less a priority. In addition if health care is not a priority the need for medical insurance coverage will not be appreciated.
In order to make use of your insurance coverage when accessing health care services, you will have to pay up front and get reimbursed within 90 days by your insurance provider. This explains why many persons with private insurance still resort to using the public health sector.
For visitors to the island, always check with your local provider as well as your travel insurance agency when making your St Lucia travel plans.. Nonetheless be prepared to always pay upfront either cash, travelers checks or via credit card.
